Seasonal Allergies are Nothing to Sneeze At!

Seasonal allergies have hit many of us hard this spring, but there are so many natural remedies your can use to find relief from common symptoms.

Why do we get allergies?

In the Barrel Theory of allergies, our body has the capacity to hold onto a certain number of allergens without reacting. But once that barrel becomes full we begin to suffer from symptoms.

How can we alleviate our symptoms?

To alleviate seasonal allergy symptoms, it’s necessary to:

  1. Decrease the number of allergens you bombard your bodies with. Identify and remove products that could be irritating your body and filling your allergen barrel (e.g. food, chemicals in body and cleaning products, pollutants).
  2. Cleanse your Liver.
  3. Increase the size of your allergy barrel so we’re less likely to have symptoms (acupuncture and herbs are great for this!).

Remedies for Seasonal Allergies

DIY Cleansing Drink: This cleansing beverage contains lemon juice, sweetener, lemon and peppermint essential oils and water. Drinking it every morning can help detox your Liver first thing. Sipping on it all day can help reduce your allergy symptoms.

Herbs: Chinese Medicine herbal supplements like AllerEase and Jade Windscreen contain astragalus and other herbs that not only decrease sinus congestion, itchiness and sneezing, but also increase the size of your allergy barrel so you’re less susceptible to pollen! (As with any herbs, please consult a certified herbalist before taking!)

Baraka neti pot

Neti Pot: Using a neti pot every day helps to rinse pollen and allergens out of your sinuses so you don’t react as much to them. We have a secret on how to use neti pots without the water going down your throat! Using infused sea salt in your neti pot can amp up the effects. Infused sea salt contains green myrtle and rosemary to clear sinuses and break up phlegm, balsam fir to prevent respiratory ailments and palmarosa and cedar, which are anti-virals.

Pollen-Fortified Honey: If you’re allergic to pollen, consume a small amount of raw, local honey or bee pollen every day. We love local Bare Honey’s Pollen-Fortified Raw Honey because they collect pollen from their hives all over the Twin Cities, all season, and mix them together before adding them back to the honey. This means that you’ll get a small dose of any of the hundreds of pollens that could be affecting you! Add a half teaspoon to tea, lemon water or oatmeal every morning and see how you feel in a month.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture can reduce all the symptoms of allergies—sinus congestion, sneezing, watery eyes, itchiness, coughing…you name it! But the best part about a course of acupuncture for your allergies is that it enables you to tolerate even more allergens by making your allergen barrel bigger. A recent study confirmed this, showing that acupuncture reduces allergy symptoms and resulted in patients using less medication, even a FULL YEAR LATER!
